Now it's post-season time. In every single winter sport, some sort of Section III tournament, or sectional championship, is taking place or has taken place. Here is a summary of what we'll be going through..
1. This week marked the start of the Section III boys basketball playoffs. In Class AA, opening-round results left us with very intriguing quarterfinals .Top seed Utica Proctor hosts CBA, the same team the Raiders beat in the semifinals a year ago. No. 4 seed Oswego hosts no. 5 seed C-NS, the Buccaneers having won their regular-season encounter to get the home court for the rematch with the red-hot Northstars. No. 3 seed F-M gets no. 6 seed Nottingham, a game that figures to be tougher than the Hornetes' Jan. 20 rout of the Bulldogs. And defending champion Henninger, the no. 2 seed, draws West Genesee, who knocked off Rome Free Academy on the road in the first round, but lost in this very same round to the Black Knights 12 months ago. 2. As expected, J-D has the top seed in Class A, drawing Whitesboro in the quarterfinals as Utica-Notre Dame and New Hartford meet for the third time this season, Cortland draws ESM and Indian River plays Mexico. Class B has already seen major upheaval as no. 2 seed South Jefferson, no. 4 seed Cazenovia and no. 5 seed Sherburne-Earlville all lost in Tuesday's opening round. Thus, top seed Bishop Ludden may have an easier time of it, drawing Hannibal in the quarterfinals as two sub-.500 teams, Westhill and Marcellus, meet, too. VVS, who knocked off South Jefferson, gets General Brown, and no. 3 seed Bishop Grimes gets a tough match-up Saturday night against Skaneateles, though the Cobras beat the Lakers in mid-January. 3. It's an extraordinary set of Class C boys basketball quarterfinals, with top seed Cooperstown getting Sauquoit Valley (who stunned Tully) and, in the same half, city rivals Institute of Technology Central and Syracuse Academy of Science meet again. Mohawk, the no. 2 seed, gets Little Falls, while Beaver River puts a 16-game win streak on the line against Pulaski. Class D split, with the two favorites in separate halves - New York Mills the top seed in D-1, Sackets Harbor the top seed in D-2. In the D-1 playoffs, Mills gets Stockbridge Valley, Cincinnatus goes against Alex Bay, McGraw plays Otselic Valley and no. 2 seed Oriskany plays Poland. Sackets, in D-2, starts with Old Forge, as no. 2 seed Faith Heritage meets Madison, Lyme takes on Oppenheim-Ephrata and Rome Catholic plays Blessed Virgin Mary. 4. Yes, the C-NS girls basketball team lost to Christ The King Sunday in the Bronx, but it's still expected to sail through the sectional Classs AA bracket, meeting Nottingham in the quarterfinals. The others pit CBA against Liverpoool, West Genesee against Corcoran and no. 2 seed F-M against Utica Proctor. J-D, the top seed in Class A despite its loss to CBA in the regular-season finale (its first blemish of the season), has Whitesboro in the quarterfinals, just as New Hartford, the no. 2 seed, plays Mexico, no. 3 seed Cortland draws ESM (just like the boys side) and no. 4 seed Carthage takes on Indian River. 5. Class B girls basketball split, and all the favorites went to B-1, where Westhill, South Jefferson and Utica-Notre Dame, all ranked in the state top five, are the top three seeds. The Warriors play Marcellus, the Spartans get Ilion and the Jugglers, a no. 3 seed, get a dangerous quarterfinal with Bishop Grimes as Bishop Ludden hosts Holland Patent. Sherburne-Earlville ended up with the B-2 top seed and gets to host General Brown, just as Jordan-Elbridge wonders if Molly Hourigan will return for the Eagles' quarterfinal against Skaneateles. No. 2 seed Adirondack hosts APW in Boonville, with Hannibal, a dangerous no. 3 seed, playing Clinton. The question - does anyone in B-2 have any chance of knocking off the B-1 powers once they get together in the Carrier Dome on March 2? 6. Like Class B, Class C girls basketball split, too, leaving Kristin McGraw and Thousand Islands with the C-1 top seed. The other quarterfinals pit Herkimer against Tully, Onondaga against Watertown IHC and Pulaski against Little Falls. In C-2, it's undefeated Weedsport in the top slot, with defending champ Fabius-Pompey, restored to full health, as the no. 3 seed and Cooperstown in between them as the no. 2 seed, all favored to move ahead. Hamilton, despite its Feb. 9 loss to Oriskany, still has the top seed in its quest for a Class D three-peat, playing Copenhagen in the quarterfinals as Oriskany draws Sackets Harbor. Alex Bay gets Rome Catholic and two state-ranked sides, Poland and New York Mills, meet in the other quarterfinals. 7. This week marks the start of the Section III ice hockey playoffs. West Genesee will put its 20-0 record on the line in the Division I quarterfinals against Hamilton after the Emerald Knights won a play-in game, rallying past Watertown IHC 3-2 in overtime, with co-favorite Rome Free Academy meeting Corcoran. Solvay hosts first-time playoff participant Central Square and C-NS meets F-M in the other quarterfinals. It starts in Division II with reigning state champ Cazenovia meeting a Clinton side it crushed 11-2 in the regular-season finale, while CBA/J-D plays Auburn. Those winners get the top two seeds, Oswego and Skaneateles, in the semifinals early next week, leading to the Feb. 25 title games at Utica Memorial Auditorium. 8. In the first-ever Section III wrestling championships contested at SRC Arena last Saturday, there were surprises on the team side, with Indian River upending Fulton in Division I and Canastota doing the same to favored Phoenix in Division II. On the individual side, Sandy Creek's Derek Pfluger, Liverpool's Pat Carroll-Marsh and Chittenango's Wes Blanding maintained unbeaten marks, and Canastota's Zach Zupan became a third-generation sectional champ (his father and grandfather both won before). Indian River's Derrick Gray won a fourth straight sectional crown, a first for his school. All the winners advanced to next weekend's state championships at Albany's Times Union Center. 9. They have set up Saturday's Section III girls volleyball finals at Jamesville-DeWitt, which start at 10 a.m. and run through the day and night. In Class A, Whitesboro faces Mexico. In Class B, it's Homer against Canastota. The C-1 final pits Tully against Herkimer, the C-2 final has unbeaten Beaver River against Dolgeville, and in Class D Hamilton will face Cincinnatus. Not far away, at Nottingham, they will hold the Section III boys swimming championships, where West Genesee, defending the Class A and overall championships, is expected to get a strong challenge from Liverpool, while individuals from Oswego, F-M, Auburn and CBA/J-D are also expected to star. The Class A and B finals are Friday, the George Falwell Cup and state qualifier takes place on Sunday. 10. Up at SRC Arena this weekend, they will hold the Section III indoor track and field championships, with the Class AA and A divisions on Friday night and the B and C/D divisions on Saturday. This comes on the heels of Liverpool star Zavon Watkins winning the mile at last Saturday's Millrose Games at the Armory in New York City. And just to make this full week complete, there's also the Section III boys and girls bowling championships, kicking off Saturday morning just as we go on the air at Strike-N-Spare Lanes in Mattydale. VVS, Oswego, Fulton and Auburn are among the boys teams to watch, with Baldwinsville, Fulton, Rome Free Academy and Auburn among the favorites in what should be a competitive girls tournament. |
