Best Buy Coaches Call: Mike Callan, New Hartford girls basketball. Despite just having a no. 8 seed, Callan led the Spartans to the Section III Class A finals before falling to Cortland.
Bottar-Leone Breakout Performance: Kristin McGraw, Thousand Island girls basketball. McGraw, a freshman, earned 20 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Vikings past Little Falls 55-42 in the Class C semifinals on Feb. 27.
HSBC Hometown Hero: Drake Becksted, Oswego boys swimming. Becksted finished third in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle in the state championship meet Feb. 27 in Buffalo, earning All-American honors in the process.
Landmasters Landmark Play; Adrian Edwards, Syracuse Academy of Science boys basketball, hitting a 3-pointer with two seconds left to lift the Atoms past DeRuyter 50-47 in the Class D semifinals on Feb. 27.
McDonald's Team of the Week: Skaneateles girls volleyball. Under the direction of coach Doreen Doctor, the Lakers went 19-0 this season, winning its first Section III Class B title in 12 years and also sweeping Beekmantown for the regional championship.
Metro Mattress MVP: Jailaan Kinsey, Jamesville-DeWitt boys basketball. Kinsey's 24 points, including four 3-pointers, helped the Red Rams pull away from Utica-Notre Dame 69-52 in the Class A semifinals on Feb. 27.
Mirbeau Inn and Spa Megastar: Anthony DeJean, Rome Free Academy boys indoor track and field. DeJean broke the Section III record in the boys long jump (23 feet 10 1/2 inches) in the state qualifier March 1, then won the state title five days later by going 23 feet 9 inches.
OCC Student-Athlete: Lara Allen, Dolgeville girls volleyball. Allen's 24 assists led the Blue Devils past Beaver River in the Class C-2 final on Feb. 20, and her big serves pushed Dolgeville to a win over Tully in the overall Class C final four nights later.
Papa Sports Venue: Barton Hall at Cornell Unviersity, site of the March 6 state indoor track and field championship meet where many different Section III athletes earned victories, including Alex Hatz (F-M), Zavon Watkins (Liverpool) and Anthony DeJean (RFA).
Sam's Auto Body Show-Stopper: Zach Lewis, West Genesee ice hockey. Lewis earned a three-goal hat trick in the Wildcats' 4-0 win over Baldwinsville in the Section III Division I final on Feb. 27, then had three assists in a 3-1 regional final victory over Potsdam on March 6.
Sports PT Superstar: Isaac Virag, Living Word Academy boys volleyball. Virag pounded out 21 kills and eight blocks, leading the Lions to a three-game sweep of VVS and the Section III Class B championship on March 4.
Strength In Motion Standout: Pat O'Donnell, Ben Seketa, Tyler Olson and Carson Elias, the West Genesee 200 medley relay team that broke the sectional record at the state championships with a time of 1:34.31, missing the title by just 0.05 seconds.
Supercuts Sensational Play: Alex Fukes, New Hartford, scoring the overtime goals to both beat Cazenovia 3-2 in the Section III Division II final on Feb. 28, then converting again in triple overtime to beat Webster Thomas 5-4 in a regional final classic on March 6.
Testone, Marshall and DiScenza Defensive Athlete: Ayana Bradley, Corcoran girls basketball, holding CBA's all-time leading scorer, Leanne Ockenden, to 11 points in the Cougars' win over CBA in the Class AA semifinals on Feb. 27.
Travel Leaders Top Performer: Jayson Jackson, Utica Proctor boys basketball. Jackson had nine of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Raiders' rally as it beat Henninger 60-53 in the Class AA semifinals on Feb. 27.
U.S. Army Male Athlete: Jared Suderley, West Canada Valley boys basketball. Suderley, with 40 points against Onondaga and 35 points against Watertown IHC, all but carried the Indians to the Section III Class C-2 title as it won both of those games in overtime.
U.S. Army Female Athlete: Emily Durr, Utica-Notre Dame girls basketball. Just an eighth-grader, Durr led the Jugglers to the Section III Class C title as it upset top seed Bishop Grimes in the semifinals and beat Thousand Island 56-41 for the title behind Durr's 18 points.
